Northeast Ohio Women's Conference

The first ever Northeast Region Women’s Conference, “The Balancing Act” proved to be quite a success. Nearly 90 participants learned from various presentations about the intricacies involved in being females in the field of corrections. ODRC’s Honor Guard commenced the day, followed by an exceptional address by Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh, with special guest Avery II, a facility dog who aids victims. Participants then viewed various expo tables with information about health and wellness, financial resources, and various services available to staff and communities. Akron Police Detective Bertina King then entertained the crowd with anecdotes about her profession, followed by Managing Director Cynthia Mausser and Superintendent Katrina Ransom discussing their careers with the Department. Debbie Shutt from EAP educated staff on how to handle stress, Sex Offender Specialist Ruth Peters-Freeman discussed her struggles and strengths surviving breast cancer, and Janet Crawford helped clarify different types of leave programs available to staff. Those in attendance agreed the event was such a success, next year’s conference is already being scheduled.
