RiCI Hopes Earth Day Becomes Annual Event

Richland Correctional Institution offers several educational programs geared toward environmental awareness.  The collective hope is that through education, staff and peers can encourage the facility’s population to return to society more prepared and better equipped to become productive citizens in their communities. Individuals that are mindful of their meaningful contributions to the world have more reason to continue positive behaviors. That sentiment was significant in the planning of an inaugural Environmental Conservation event.

RiCI’s “Earth Conservation Day” took place earlier this month, with the theme being "Reduce Your Carbon Footprint through Recycling."  Attendees were able to visit participant booths that interest them to ask questions and engage in activities. A wide variety of organizations throughout Ohio participated in this event (ex. Columbus Zoo, Lorain County Beekeepers Association, Jade Truck, etc.) which gave complexity and diversity to environmental awareness and conservation fields.  Offenders who attended the event were informed and educated on environmental issues facing our world today and how they can help to alleviate these issues.
