NERC Welcomes Interim Director Hudson and Warden Bracy

Warden Brande Harris and the staff at NERC welcomed Interim Director Stuart Hudson and newly assigned Warden Charmaine Bracy along with NE Regional Director Todd Ishee with a tour of the facility grounds as well as tours of several Workforce Training Education (WTE) locations in the city of Cleveland who have partnered with ODRC and NERC. True Freedom Ministries CEO Rev. Mike Swiger arranged for Chef Kyle Anderson to give the group a tour of the Marble Room restaurant, located in the Former National City Bank Building. The Marble Room is a WTE site where two residents are currently enrolled in training and where three former residents are currently employed, hired shortly after their releases. The group also made a stop at Cuyahoga County Administrative Services Virgil Brown Building and Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries (LMM) where Director Hudson met with Andrew D. Genszler, the President and CEO of LMM who provided a tour and explanation of the many community enhancement initiatives underway through LMM. Warden Brande Harris will be the Warden at Trumbull Correctional Institution and Warden Bracy will take charge at NERC on the same day.

US Department of Energy tours NERC During National Convention

The US Department of Energy hosted their national convention in Cleveland and requested a tour of the Northeast Reintegration Center. They wanted to highlight many of the cost savings initiatives, energy reduction initiatives, and green initiatives that have been put in place through and by NERC Maintenance Superintendent James Monyak, who incidentally was the ODRC Employee of the Year in 2017.

Warden Brande Harris was more than willing to open up the facility, provide a tour and on-site review of how we are saving Ohioans money in every way possible, while exploring ways to expand on those savings.

NERC Staff and Residents Join Director at Cleveland City Club

Director Gary Mohr was honored with an invitation to speak at the Cleveland City Club. The event was sponsored by Community Partner Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries and the Cleveland Browns, both of whom have made a commitment to Director Mohr and the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to assist our agency in it recidivism reduction efforts.

Director Mohr stated “I’m very excited to have the Cleveland Browns on board to help us in tackling the issues that need addressed in Criminal Justice and prison reform in Ohio”.

Attending in support of Director Mohr were Ohio Parole Board Chairwoman Cynthia Mausser, NE Regional Director Todd Ishee, NERC Warden Brande Harris, Deputy Warden Brian Evans, Warden’s Assistant Jeff Bertram, and two NERC residents who are participants in the LMM Chopping for Change Program. All of the ODRC attendees paused for a photo with Cleveland Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam and his wife Dee Haslam.

NERC's 2017 Contract Employee of the Year - Jill Sullivan

Warden Harris named NERC 2017 Contractor of the Year, Chaplain Jill Sullivan! Chaplain Sullivan receives this honor for her outstanding determination to go above and beyond to not only fulfill the duties of the chaplain of a correctional facility but to do them with a joyful and willing spirit. Chaplain Sullivan works tirelessly to ensure that the offender population receives spiritual support.

Financial and Future Planning at NERC

“Lunchtime Talk” hosted by Warden Harris kicked off focusing on staff wellbeing, inspiration, and goalsetting. Warden Harris welcomed financial expert, Sean Stark, to the Northeast Reintegration Center (NERC) to share his expertise with NERC staff on financial and future planning. A question and answer session was held toward the end for staff to ask specific questions.

House of Representatives and CIIC Visits NERC

Warden Harris welcomed Representative Stephanie Howse of the 11th District, Representative Martin J. Sweeney of the 14^th District of the House of Representatives as well as members of the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee (CIIC) to the Northeast Reintegration Center (NERC). The representatives and committee members enjoyed a tour of the facilities notable programs and interacted with the population.

Grafton Warden Bestows Gift to NERC Staff

Warden LaShawn Eppinger recently delivered three beautiful metal wall plaques that were built and painted by the residents that work in the GCI welding shop.

Warden Brande Harris has had them mounted in prominent locations throughout NERC and expressed her overwhelming gratitude for the thoughtfulness of the staff and residents at NERC as NERC prepares to host a 30 Year Anniversary at the facility in the coming months. Keep your eyes out for the "Save The Date" to be coming out soon to all ODRC facilities and DPCS locations as well as to NERC Community Partners.

NERC Hosts GED Graduation Celebration with Families

Northeast Regional Principal Renee Evett and Assistant Principal Kimberly Albert proudly hosted a Graduation Ceremony at NERC for the most recent graduates of the Ohio Central School System.

Twelve students received their GED Diplomas and several others received certificates for completion of the Adult Basic Education, Pre-GED Courses, Advance Office Technology and Horticulture/Landscape Management.

Deputy Warden Brian Evans challenged each graduate to continue on to the next level of their education and Warden Brande Harris took time to remind the ladies to continue to set and achieve their goals while they are here so that they can be successful when they go home having established a habit of setting and achieving goals. Warden Harris also thanked the families who were in attendance and told them how proud she was of what the residents had achieved.

NERC's Warden Honors Military Veterans

Warden Brande Harris stopped in on the Second Shift Roll Call to honor eight veterans of the United States Military. Each veteran was presented with a “United States Veteran” lapel pin that can be displayed on their uniforms.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Toastmasters International, two Inmate Groups at NERC, combined efforts to make a year-end contribution of $2,500.00 to Laura’s Home of the City Mission.

Warden Brande Harris joined staff advisors and representatives from each group to present the checks to The City Mission Chief Development Officer Michael Parry, who commented “I am deeply touched that these incarcerated ladies are so generously willing to give back to the community in a way that will provide 100 days of care for people transitioning back in to our community.” Warden Harris said, “It’s important for our residents to have the opportunity to care for those who care for us.” Here’s to a successful continuing partnership in 2018!
