The Team was formed in order to determine if recycling at GCI was feasible and cost Effective. After Studying the process and conditions at the institution a recycling program was begun that partnered inmates, staff and the community. Connie Cook, Leader 440-748-1161.
The FACTS team was formed at Franklin Pre-Release as a response to concerns expressed by many staff regarding the lack of accountability for both personal and cleaning supplies. The team determined that misuse accounted for a large percentage of the abuse. Through an analysis of the items and their distribution, it was determined that a system should be devised and maintained which would create personal responsibility for the items by the inmate (receiver of supplies). The team made recommendations related to the implementation of a new policy. Lea Pierce, Leader 614-445-8600.
GUMPS began a project of implementing a comprehensive recycling program at GCI. When the team began its work no program for recycling existed, money was spent to remove solid waste, animals were becoming infected (contamination from waste) and there was a milk loss. The team benchmarked, brainstormed, used list reduction and audited to find a solution after the problem was documented. Their solution is currently in the implementation stage. The planned solution would reduce by two thirds solid waste being removed and waste going to landfills would also show a reduction. The expense of caring for cows could be lessened as the rate of infection falls. Jobs for special needs inmates are to be created and an improved relationship with the community is expected. Connie Cook, Leader 216-748-1161.
The QStP Steering Committee at NCCI appointed the team to review the process for garbage removal at the prison. The process, in place at that time, was costly and allowed for significant amounts of recyclable materials to be disposed of improperly. The team worked to develop a recycling awareness program for staff and inmates. Trash pickups were reduced after the team put new collection procedures in place. Inmate jobs, as reclaimers, were created and a method for collecting and recording data was formulated by the group. The WasteBuster’s results have been very impressive. Trash pickups were reduced from three to two per week. The resulting annual savings of $18,000.00 will be diverted to other areas. Thirty six inmate jobs have been created. During one month, 42 tons of cardboard, 53 tons of paper and 221 pounds of aluminum cans were recycled generating $1,000.00 in revenue returned to NCCI. Ed McGlothin, Leader 740-387-7040.
