DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION AND CORRECTION EMPLOYEE KILLED IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENT

(Columbus) --- Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) officials have confirmed that three Correction Officers and two inmates were involved in a fatal traffic accident this morning. The inmate transportation vehicle was traveling from the Warren Correctional Institution (WCI), located in Lebanon, enroute to The Ohio State University Medical Center, in Columbus.

Correction Officer Wayne Mitchell, 54 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a 15-year veteran starting his career as an officer at the Dayton Correctional Institution. He transferred to WCI in 1989.

Officer Douglas Scrivner and Officer Richard Lake, also from WCI, were transported to hospitals in Columbus. Two inmates involved, Jacob Reeder and Thomas Neville, were also taken to area hospitals in Columbus.

Inmate Reeder is incarcerated on a 2-25 year sentence from Clinton County, for Gross Sexual Imposition and three counts of Rape, from a 1997 conviction. Inmate Neville was admitted to DRC in 1986 from Columbiana County on an Aggravated Burglary charge with a 10-25 year sentence.
