COLUMBUS -- The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction today received three bids for the purchase and operation of five adult prison facilities. The bids will be scored in accordance with the state’s competitive bid process. Contracts will be awarded by September 1.
Private prison operators submitting proposals for the purchase and operation of the facilities include: Corrections Corporation of America of Nashville, Tenn., GEO Group, Inc. of Boca Raton, FL., and Management and Training Corporation of Centerville, UT.
The five prisons include two state-owned facilities currently operated by private vendors, two state-owned and operated facilities and a vacant facility. These facilities are: *Lake Erie Correctional Institution (Ashtabula); *North Coast Correctional Treatment Facility (Lorain); Grafton Correctional Institution (Lorain); North Central Correctional Institution (Marion); and Marion Juvenile Correctional Facility (Marion). [*Currently privately operated.]
Successful bidders will enter into purchase and operational contracts with the state, and assume operation of the facilities on Jan. 1, 2012.The sales and private operation will reduce taxpayers’ costs by an estimated $6.6 million annually, and provide local communities new property and income tax revenue. These facilities will be subject to the same high level of training and standards compliance required of state-operated prisons
