Ohio Prisons Donate over 17,000 Pounds of Food to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank

(Columbus) – From nearly every corner of the State, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) employees from prisons, Adult Parole Authority (APA) offices and Central Office collected non-perishable food items and hosted fund-raising events from October 25, 2010 through November 30, 2010, on behalf of the Mid-Ohio Foodbank’s “Holiday Food Basket” campaign. Today, DRC Director Ernie L. Moore announced the results of those efforts. Altogether, DRC contributed 17,122 pounds of food and over $17,500.00 to help provide meals for thousands of Ohio families in need this holiday season. DRC employees were able to donate 7,000 pounds of food and over $7,000 more than they did last year.

The Holiday Food Basket campaign began in 1983 as a means for State of Ohio employees to assist the Mid-Ohio Foodbank fulfill its mission to obtain and distribute food to more than 500 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, after-school programs, and senior housing sites across central and eastern Ohio. The campaign continues to grow each year, with state agencies contributing almost 28,000 pounds of food and nearly $53,000 to the foodbank this year.

 “The spirit of giving among DRC employees is well documented,” Director Moore stated. “Whether in response to concerns close to home or half a world away, DRC staff are eager to lend their support to those in need.”
