FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 5, 2006
(Columbus) --- Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) Director Terry J. Collins today announced that Karen A. Willingham from the Trumbull Correctional Institution (TCI) is the 2006 DRC Correction Officer of the Year and recipient of the Ronald C. Marshall Award. Officer Willingham was selected from among 30 correction officers from across the state representing each of Ohio’s prisons.
Officer Willingham began her career in corrections at TCI in 1996. In addition to her regular duties in the institution’s control center, Officer Willingham serves as a mentor to new correction officers and participates on numerous committees including the Women Issues Team (WIT), Corrections Staff Fellowship and Return-to-Work program. Away from TCI, Officer Willingham works with juvenile offenders incarcerated at the Mahoning County Justice Center and tutors students at the Friendship Baptist Church.
“The diligence and professionalism of Ohio’s correction officers are unparalleled and deserving of our recognition,” stated Director Collins. “As those serving on the front line in our prisons, we are grateful for all that they do everyday.”
