Prisons Chief Bestows the Ronald C. Marshall Award to Ohio’s Top Corrections Officer
(Columbus) – As part of the annual Public Service Recognition Week, and in conjunction with National Correctional Officers (CO) Week, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) Director Reginald A. Wilkinson announced that Susan Freno of the Belmont Correctional Institution (BeCI) is the 2004 DRC Corrections Officer (CO) of the Year and the recipient of the esteemed DRC Ronald C. Marshall Award. The award was presented to Officer Freno at a ceremony held today at the Corrections Training Academy in Orient. Officer Freno competed with 30 Corrections Officers from across the state for this award.
Officer Freno began her career with DRC in 1997 at BeCI, located in St. Clairsville. Her peers selected her as the BeCI CO of the Year, which made her eligible for the Ronald C. Marshall Award. Officer Freno is an advocate for and is deeply committed to the Adopt-A-Solider. She has unselfishly donated her time and resources to support the families of the soldiers that are serving overseas.
Officer Freno is a graduate of Belmont Technical College and a former member of the Air Force where she served as an Aircraft Fuel Systems Mechanic from January 1978 to April 1983. During her Air Force service, Officer Freno was decorated with the Air Force Training Ribbon, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal.
“The Ronald C. Marshall Award is presented each year to a Corrections Officer that is nominated by his or her co-workers as an example of professionalism and integrity in this agency,” stated Director Wilkinson. “We are honored to have Officer Freno represent us for 2004, she is certainly deserving of this award.”
