The Country Haven Center operates on the grounds of the Mansfield Correctional Institution (ManCI). ManCI houses an average of 2,400 minimum, medium, and close security inmates. The ManCI Country Haven Center is proud to highlight the following educational programs:
The Masonry program at Mansfield Correctional Institution is one of the best career-tech programs offered to offenders. The masonry program begins in the classroom, starting with small projects of laying brick and block to learning the importance of mortar mixing. This along with proper classroom instruction initiates the students’ learning process; and it doesn’t stop there. Once basic skills and knowledge are achieved, the Masonry program begins to assist in other areas of the institution.
The masonry program has been involved with various projects such as an office/restroom addition to the institution sally port using four inch block interior and engineering brick to match the institution. The students repaired the sidewalk in front of the library by setting forms and pouring four inches of concrete that was mixed by hand. The students learned how to proportion the Portland cement, sand, and limestone while adding enough water to make concrete. The students gain hands on work experience with on-the-job training doing institutional projects.
In addition, the Country Haven Center has successfully implemented a new voluntary tutor program to assist general population and current student in earning a GED. Statistics show that math and writing, or a combination of both, are the two areas requiring the most focus in preparation for the GED exam. The voluntary tutor program offered to offenders is assisted by inmate tutors. These tutors are certified in the CEA Tutor Training class that is taught by the ManCI literacy teacher. The tutors assist the offenders in all five subject areas to help achieve success in passing the required testing of CASAS, Pre-GED, and finally the GED. To date, ManCI had 11 offenders pass their GED while participating in this program.
The Advanced Job Training at ManCI Country Haven Center offers courses through Ashland University. The classes offered through Ashland University include Communications, Keyboarding, Economics, Accounting, and Psychology.
