12 July TCI Aquaponics Adventure – First in the North East Region July 12, 2017 By ODRC Institutions, Trumbull Correctional Institution TCI, Aquaponics, Aquaculture, Eco-friendly Program, Portage County Soil and Water 0 Over the past year TCI staff have been hard at work establishing a new eco-friendly program. Implementation of Aquaponics was the vision of a determined TCI Corrections Officer along with various staff and offenders working toward a specific goal. Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (the soil-less growing of plants) that grows fish and plants together in one integrated system. TCI’s Aquaponics adventure became visible with the preparation of fish tanks. The tanks were tested and proved to be in working order. Portage County Soil and Water delivered a donation of high breed bluegill and 150 channel catfish to get the program started. Staff and inmates are anxious to see the results of this endeavor.
