16 March Cleveland Area Colleges Enjoy Community Partnership with NERC March 16, 2017 By ODRC Institutions, Northeast Reintegration Center (NERC) NERC, Bryant and Stratton College, Cuyahoga Community College, Case Western Reserve, Akron University, Baldwin Wallace University, Community Partnerships 0 At Northeast Reintegration Center (NERC), the community partnership extends to providing several on-going internship opportunities for area students. Students majoring in Criminal Justice at Bryant and Stratton College and Cuyahoga Community College conduct internships and job-shadowing with corrections officers, supervisors and unit management staff. Nursing students from Case Western Reserve or Akron University conduct internships with the medical and mental health departments. Students majoring in social work at Cleveland State University are provided the opportunity to be trained to facilitate reentry approved programming in small group settings. Graduate students from Baldwin Wallace University routinely visit for examination and study of the impact of crime on the offender and the offender’s families. These kinds of studies and research often result in the development of programs funded at state and federal levels that result in significant community improvement and reduction of crime and recidivism. Warden’s Assistant Bertram believes that “by providing students with real-life experience in the field of corrections we are developing the next-generation of well-educated correctional professionals”.
